When you were a kid, what did you want to grow up to be?

I definitely wanted to be a Major League Baseball player. But alas, instead of being gifted with a 97 mph fastball I have a very keen sense of smell…which is really a mixed bag if you know what I mean. Heidi actually made it to the majors…as a mom…which is what she always really wanted to be, a mom. (Never in a million years growing up did either one of us think we would be involved in pastoring!)

Where are you originally from?

I grew up in Mt.Prospect  and Oak Brook…Heidi started out in Chicago and then moved to Maywood.

How do you like to spend a free afternoon?

If I happen to be in a National Park…oh say, like the Grand Canyon? I would thoroughly enjoy a long hike. Heidi thinks I’m crazy in this regard. She would prefer a good book by a pool somewhere…and she’d be fine if that somewhere happened to be Cabo San Lucas or Daytona Beach.

What is the best gift you’ve ever been given?

Ok I could be sappy and say, Heidi. Or I could be sincere and say, Heidi. So I’ll just say Heidi. As for her, this is a tough one to answer. So I’ll do it for her. (No I am not going to say me!)  When my brother in law Bill moved to Florida He bequeathed to us his two headed elephant table. It’s pretty special. (Next time Heidi will make up her own answer, I think).

What fascinates you?

A lot of things blow my mind. Nature. Oh my goodness! I have a hummingbird feeder out my window. What a masterpiece by the creator! Those little guys amaze me. Heidi could probably stare at a sequoia long enough to set a world record. We have a little sequoia at home. We killed our first one in a few months. But so far so good with this one. Now if we can just keep it going for about a thousand years or so and it will be quite impressive!

What is the scariest thing you’ve ever done?

That would be starting a church with only two people…each other! But no doubt it has been a fun ride!

What is your greatest joy?

I love to lead service teams to developing countries, especially with people who have never gone before. And I would have to say Haiti holds the most special place in my heart.  Heidi loves to snuggle with her granddaughters!
